the first sentence is find the way it is. But if you wanted to get more complicated with it you could say
"He was at a complete loss and wasn't sure how to handle his feelings that he was now feeling" or
"He started feeling a lot of new feelngs and was at a complete loss as how to handle them."
just to name a couple
There are many other ways to write this sentence.
