If you can focus on just that one spot for sanding and refinishing, then that would be ok. But more than likely you may have to do the entire floor to match. A good idea to guard against stains in the future would be to put some kind of plastic sheet underneath the rug where it continuously gets soiled.
Stripping and refinishing furniture is just a tad more pleasant than having your eyes gouged with red hot pokers.
It is hard, nasty, dirty tedious work.
For a man, it will probably be a project for him alone, as he would like to transform this $8 item into a thing of beauty for you. (It's a knight in shining armor kind of thing).
If he gets tired or frustrated, then offer to help him. Otherwise, I would let him slay this dragon alone.
